De excentrieke wetenschapper Seth Brundle heeft een revolutionaire machine ontwikkeld, de 'telepod', waarmee hij objecten of levende wezens wil teleporteren. Journaliste Veronica Quaife volgt Brundles experimenten met een videocamera. Wanneer Brundle in een dronken bui zichzelf als proefpersoon gebruikt, merkt hij niet dat er ook een vlieg in de telepod aanwezig is. De teleportatie lijkt succesvol te zijn, maar langzaamaan begint Brundle te veranderen in een hybride wezen, een kruising tussen een mens en een vlieg.
