1869 : deux adolescents paniques enterrent un mystérieux coffre. 1968 : Alan Panish, 10 ans, découvre à l'intérieur du coffre enfoui, une fascinante boîte de jeu qu'il emporte chez lui. Le soir même, il entame une partie avec son amie Sarah. A son premier coup de dés, il est aspiré par le jeu, et disparaît. 1995 : même maison, à l'abandon, où emménagent Judy et Peter avec leur tante, Nora.
