New York, début des années 1970. Après avoir participé à une audition, Jeannie, une adolescente, décide de ne pas rentrer chez elle et de s'installer avec un chanteur hippie. Sa disparition du foyer familial inquiète ses parents qui partent à sa recherche à travers la ville. Ils vont bientôt faire la connaissance d'autres parents désorientés, confrontés au même problème. Ensemble, ils décident de constituer une «association de parents d'enfants perdus» et de se familiariser avec les nouveaux codes de cette société libertaire à laquelle ils ne comprennent plus rien
