Ancien disciple de Merlin et grand sorcier des temps modernes, Balthazar Blake tente de défendre Manhattan de son ennemi juré Maxim Horvath, maître de la magie noire. Pour asseoir sa domination, celui-ci est prêt à tout, même à libérer la diabolique fée Morgane. Seul «le premier Merlinien» a la puissance nécessaire pour s'y opposer. Dans ce but, il enrôle Dave, un étudiant en physique un peu gauche mais au potentiel insoupçonné, pour en faire son apprenti et lui enseigner les rudiments de la magie. Dave aura besoin de tout son courage pour survivre à cet entraînement intensif et prouver à Balthazar qu'il est digne de son incroyable destinée d'apprenti sorcier
